Algorithms are not to be regarded as a technical structure but as a social phenomenon - they embed themselves, currently still very subtle, into our political and social system. Algorithms shape human behavior on various levels: they influence not only the aesthetic reception of the world but also the well-being and social interaction of their users. They act and intervene in a political and social context. As algorithms influence individual behavior in these social and political situations, their power should be the subject of critical discourse - or even lead to active disobedience and to the need for appropriate tools and methods which can be used to break the algorithmic power.

Wie verändern sich gesellschaftliche Praktiken und die Chancen demokratischer Technikgestaltung, wenn neben Bürger*innen und Öffentlichkeit auch Roboter, Algorithmen, Simulationen oder selbstlernende Systeme einbezogen und als Beteiligte ernstgenommen werden? Algorithmen spielen eine immer wichtigere Rolle in fast allen Bereichen der Mathematik. Dieses Lehrbuch eignet sich für den Studienbeginn und stellt den klassischen Vorlesungen über Analysis und Lineare Algebra eine dritte mathematische Grundvorlesung zur Seite, die die Autoren in den letzten Jahren mehrfach an der Universität Bonn gehalten haben. Ziel dieses Werkes ist die Vermittlung grundlegender mathematischer Fähigkeiten, besonders im Hinblick auf Entwurf und Analyse von Algorithmen, sowie deren Implementierung. Neben einigen fundamentalen Algorithmen (z.B. Zudem werden grundlegende Programmierkenntnisse vermittelt, und es wird gezeigt, wie man Algorithmen in C++ implementiert. The book covers different aspects of real-world applications of optimization algorithms. It provides insights from the Seventh International Conference on Harmony Search, Soft Computing and Applications held at Virtual Conference, Seoul, South Korea, in February 2022. Harmony search (HS) is one of the most popular metaheuristic algorithms, developed in 2001 by Prof. Joong Hoon Kim and Prof. Zong Woo Geem, that mimics the improvisation process of jazz musicians to seek the best harmony. This book constitutes the proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Algorithms and Discrete Applied Mathematics, CALDAM 2023, which was held in Gandhinagar, India, during February 9-11, 2023. The 32 papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 67 submissions.
